Where the number comes from

Neonatal intensive care guidelines have long aimed to keep average sound in hospital nurseries below roughly 45 to 50 dBA to protect premature infants in a continuous, round-the-clock environment. Infant sound-machine studies later used a similar level as a comparison point. Somewhere along the way, consumer content flattened this into "keep white noise under 50 dB."

What the number cannot tell you

  • Position. A reading beside the machine is not the reading at the mattress.
  • Duration. A low level for twelve hours is a different exposure than the same level for one.
  • Peaks. Averages hide loud transients from a sound file or a speaker.
  • Device accuracy. A phone microphone without validation can easily be off by several dB.

How to use 50 dBA well

Treat it as a reference, not a finish line. If your crib-height check reads around that level, first ask whether you can go lower and still mask the household. If it reads well above it, lower the volume or move the machine and check again. Either way, use a timer.
